Hidden Gems: Dixie Canyon Park and Longridge Park

Whether you're an urban explorer or just in the mood for a quick hike, there are some secret suburban trails in Los Angeles that offer a little slice of heaven. Head to Sherman Oaks and you'll discover two such hidden gems: a 0.6-mile loop micro-hike through shaded Dixie Canyon Park and a 0.7-mile out-and-back vista-filled adventure through neighboring Longridge Park.

Dixie Canyon Park, a 20-acre park donated by Warren Beatty and operated by the MRCA (as is nearby Longridge), offers a short, easy hiking trail that has some of the most spectacular views in all of L.A. The shady, wooded canyon is bordered by a perennial stream and boasts numerous rock formations and hoodoos.

You can see the Santa Susana Mountains, peaks of Griffith Park and deep into local canyons while savoring the natural beauty of this area. You'll find the hike to be a little steep, but with switchbacks and a short descent it isn't difficult to complete.

Take the trail from the parking lot and you will be greeted with some charming stone steps leading up into the canyon. Continue up for about 250 feet until a wooden plank bridge appears on your right side. Then, turn left to start the loop, which climbs 175 feet and then decends to a footbridge at the end of the loop.

The best part of this hike is that it's a great place to catch some sun and a breeze while absorbing those beautiful canyon views. There are a few benches scattered along the trail that you can sit on and enjoy your surroundings.

This is a perfect place for kids to play and adults to relax as well. There is a nice playground and several picnic areas with tables that are available to use.

There is a good view of the Santa Monica Mountains, as well as a few shady areas that are perfect for reading or taking a nap. The park is also dog-friendly so your furry family members can be as active or laid back as you want them to be.

Besides the trails, there is also a recreation center which has a world class Little League and Soccer complex and many other sports and fitness programs to choose from. This is also a great place for families with young children to learn new skills and make friends as there are many things for kids to do here such as dance, baseball, volleyball and tennis.

The Van Nuys Sherman Oaks Recreation Center is a quiet park where you can get away from your busy life and have a relaxing time. You can meet new people, meditate, do pranayama or just enjoy the beautiful garden in peace.

The park is close to many restaurants and shopping areas including the Westfield Fashion Square Mall, Trader Joe's, coffee shops and other stores. This is also a great place to meet with your friends and family for a picnic or a barbecue.
